Happy New Year

“I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you’ll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you’ll make something that didn’t exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind.” –Neil Gaiman

New Year is almost upon us. This is a time I truly love, because it is a starting over. A chance to re-examine our journey, our maps, our supplies and our decisions. And then, to change course, or stay the course, or do whatever is in our hearts. It is a new year, with new options and a chance to start over. The year is new and WE are new.

Of course, this newness is actually the reality of every moment and every day.  The problem is, it’s often hard to see, until we have a marker for change. I have an old friend who always tells me “no one and nothing ever changes” and he truly believes this. And as he believes, so it is for him. (in a sense).  He always tells the exact same stories, greets me with the exact same greeting, orders the same food, has the same drink, and etc. He tells me he is the same boring person he was when he was 4 years old, and I can’t convince him of anything different, so he remains trapped within his own belief.

But that is all it is… a belief and a trap. The world is dynamic. The seasons show us this, birth and death and everything imbetween shows us this. And it is a blessing. Be who you want to be- unfettered by your past. Live your life in the way that you want to live, give back to this world, have faith in the flow and ride it, master it. Let the past guide us, but not own us. Let the future inspire us, but not deceive us. Let us hoist the sails of our own unique visions and see where the tide takes us. And next year (or tomorrow) let’s do it again.
